Why Attend

The census drives how public resources are allocated and how state and local governments plan for housing, transportation, education, health services, and more. Redistricting data produced by the Census Bureau impacts how legislative and congressional districts are drawn. Early engagement helps ensure that Minnesota’s geographic boundaries, block definitions, and data needs are reflected accurately in the 2030 redistricting products.

Part 1: Census Data Program Kickoff (policy, engagement, and leadership focus)

At the kickoff meeting, you will hear from:

  • U.S. Census Bureau Redistricting Office and Geography Division staff, who will share an overview of key programs that impact geographic and data quality work, including redistricting data planning.
  • The Minnesota State Demographer, who will provide insights on Minnesota’s role in the federal census, discuss statewide planning efforts, and outline how Minnesota can engage effectively with Census Bureau activities throughout the decade.
  • Legislative Coordinating Commission, which will outline the legislative redistricting timeline and describe its role in providing technical support, mapping, prisoner reallocation, and redistricting data preparation for the Minnesota Legislature.

Part 2: Block Boundary Suggestion Project (BBSP) Technical Training

Following the kickoff session, Census Bureau staff will provide hands-on training for technical and GIS stakeholders on the Block Boundary Suggestion Project (BBSP). This session is intended for local, county, and regional planning agencies, election officials, and others involved in geographic data and boundary management.

Training will cover the use of Census tools and processes for submitting block boundary and geographic feature updates in advance of the 2030 census.

This meeting marks the beginning of a multi-year effort. We encourage participation from legislative, executive, local government, GIS, and election stakeholders.

We hope you will join us to learn, ask questions, and provide input on Minnesota’s approach in the years ahead. Please forward this invitation to anyone in your office who may be interested in shaping the 2030 census blocks. Please bring a laptop.
